Justice Newton was appointed to the Ontario Court of Justice in 1989, presiding exclusively in criminal matters. Prior to her elevation to the Bench she was a criminal defence counsel, legal aid duty counsel, a prosecutor with the Canadian Department of Justice, legal advisor to the Department of Defence for the CF-18 aircraft procurement and counsel with the Manitoba Public Insurance Corporation.
Justice Newton is an active member of the Canadian Chapter of the International Association of Women Judges (“CCIAWJ”) and has served on the Board of Directors since 2006 in a number of positions including President from 2009 – 2011 and chair of the Nominating Committee. She will continue on the Board as International Director.
She was the North American Representative on the Nominating Committee for the International Association of Women Judges (“IAWJ”), and a member of a panel on Incarcerated Women at the IAWJ Conference in London, England.
She has been a frequent panelist at numerous continuing education programs with respect to a variety of issues, including: women and girls in the justice system, retention of women in the legal profession, criminal advocacy, and Aboriginal justice. She has served on the planning committee for several conferences and was the Co-Chair of the National Conference “Judging Women: Aging, Mental Health and Culture” co-sponsored by the National Judicial Institute and CCIAWJ.
Justice Newton has been a regular participant in mooting competitions and for several years was Chair of the Gale Cup, a leading Canadian criminal law Moot. She was Chair of the program on Ethics and Professionalism sponsored by the Law Society of Upper Canada.
