The Honorable Leslie M. Alden has joined the faculty at The George Mason University School of Law as a Senior Lecturer in Law after serving the law school as a Distinguished Adjunct Professor of Law. She teaches Virginia Procedure and Evidence.
Judge Alden has nearly two decades of experience on the bench hearing civil and criminal cases, with nearly three decades of legal experience in all aspects of litigation. She served as a trial court judge in the Fairfax County, Virginia Circuit Court from 1996 until her retirement and was a trial judge in a special jurisdiction court in the Fairfax County General District Court prior to that time.
For many years, Judge Alden has been a frequent participant in international legal and judicial programs, notably having served as the President of the International Association of Women Judges, 2008-2010, and she remains on the IAWJ Board of Managerial Trustees. She served the National Association of Women Judges (US) as its International Director for 5 years, developing the award-winning judicial program Beyond Borders: The Impact of International Law in U.S. Courts.
Judge Alden has delivered a judicial perspective about the importance of the rule of law and the observance of human rights principles in courts, by speaking to legal groups in Nigeria, Tanzania, Cuba, Chile, South Africa, Italy, Russia, Turkey, Jordan, Hungary, Brazil, India and South Korea. She also serves on the Board of the International Judicial Academy. Judge Alden serves as a Corresponding Editor for International Legal Materials, a publication of The American Society of International Law, as well as a member of the Editorial Review Board for the Advanced Management Journal, the publication of the Society for the Advancement of Management.
Before joining the bench, Judge Alden was a shareholder in the law firm Verner, Liipfert, Bernhard, McPherson & Hand in Washington, D.C., with a practice centered on commercial litigation and local government law.
Judge Alden earned her J.D. in 1983 from George Mason University School of Law, and earned her B.S. (Business Administration) in 1978 from George Mason University. In 2001, she completed the Economics Institute for State Judges presented by the Law and Organizational Economics Center. In 2005, she completed the Sir Richard May Seminar on International Law and International Courts presented by the International Judicial Academy.
A member of the Virginia State and the District of Columbia Bars, Judge Alden remains active in numerous professional groups.
