IAWJ Officers at Korean Association's Annual Meeting

October 24, 2006

On October 24-25, 2006, the Korea Women Judges Association held its second annual meeting in Seoul, Korea, and invited members of the IAWJ’s Executive Council to join them for the meeting. Five members were able to attend: President Graciela Dixon, President-Elect Leslie Alden, Past President Jane Mathews, Vice President for Publications Lucy Mailula, and Executive Director Joan Winship. The theme of the meeting was A New Vision for Leadership and Empowerment of Korean Women Judges. In the opening session, two Korean professors spoke on issues of judicial leadership in Korea: Dr. Yang-hee Kim, Korean Women Development Center, and Professor Joo-hee Lee, Ewha Women’s University. Following their presentations, all five IAWJ officers spoke about the history and work of the IAWJ, including programs of the NAWJ in the USA and of the IAWJ-South Africa Chapter, the importance of the IAWJ for women judges internationally, and the current programs and work of the IAWJ. While the Korean Association conducted business in the afternoon, the IAWJ officers were taken on a tour of the Old Korea Palace. On other days, in addition to tours, IAWJ officers met to talk about IAWJ business and held interviews. Hon. Graciela Dixon attended a lunch with the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Korea. Special thanks go to Supreme Court Justices Kim Young-Ran and Jeon Soo-Ahn for their leadership in Korea and the gracious hospitality they extended to the IAWJ officers. Although the KAWJ is a new association, Justice Kim and Justice Jeon were among the early members of the IAWJ, having attended the US NAWJ meeting in 1989, and the inaugural meeting of the IAWJ in 1991.
