IAWJ’s President-Elect part of historic move of the UK’s Supreme Court
October 1, 2009
Marking an historic change in government, the United Kingdom has established a new Supreme Court that replaces the Appellate Committee of the House of Lords. The new court for the first time allows for a complete separation between the United Kingdom’s senior Judges and the Upper House of Parliament, emphasizing the independence of the Law Lords and increasing the transparency between Parliament and the courts.
In August 2009 the judges on the new UK Supreme Court moved from their former home in the House of Lords to a new building. On October 1st, Queen Elizabeth officially opened the new Court and its 11 members, including IAWJ President-Elect, Baroness of Richmond, Lady Brenda Hale, were sworn in. Their move was celebrated by a ceremony attended by leaders and justices, politicians and others from across the UK and around the world.
The IAWJ congratulates IAWJ President-Elect Baroness Brenda Hale and her colleagues on this exciting new chapter for their judiciary system.
