Judges form new Association of Women Judges-Bosnia Herzegovina

December 21, 2009

The IAWJ congratulates the women judges of Bosnia-Herzegovina, who have recently formed the first Association of Women Judges in the South Eastern Europe region. The judges held an Opening Assembly in September and officially completed the registration process on November 5, 2009. Given the post-conflict situation that still exists in the country, this Association allows the women judges from both parts of BiH to come together and collaborate on important issues.

On December 21st, the new association held a day-long Roundtable on ‘Gender Equality and Sexual Exploitation.” More than 70 people attended, including federal prosecutors, police, social workers, NGOs, and 10 persons from outside Sarajevo. There were six panel presentations on research about sexual exploitation, given by a federal prosecutor, a judge, the head of the Domestic Violence Division of the Ministry of Interior, a representative of the BiH Department of Human Rights, and a representative from Gender Equality. To indicate the level of support received, the President of the High Judicial and Prosecutorial Council also attended. Public education was extended through a press release.

The AWJ-BiH is now conducting further research to develop its country report, which will be presented in Seoul, South Korea in May 2010 as part of the international education component of the project, and they are planning a multi-sectoral justice consultation on Sexual Exploitation and Trafficking the week of March 22-26 in Banja Luka.
