The International Association of Women Judges (IAWJ) recently participated in a series of high-level events in Kazakhstan, organized in collaboration with the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), aimed at advancing the empowerment of women judges and supporting the next generation of legal professionals.

Representing the IAWJ, Judge Ita Farrelly, IAWJ European Regional Board Member, delivered key interventions across multiple sessions, highlighting the Association’s mission, global programmes, and the growing importance of judicial leadership in promoting equal access to justice worldwide.
During her visit, Judge Farrelly provided practical guidance on the establishment and strengthening of women judges’ associations, contributing to ongoing efforts by regional stakeholders, including the emerging Alliance of Women in Justice for Central Asia. She also delivered opening remarks at the “Young Professionals in Justice” intensive training course, underscoring the IAWJ’s commitment to youth engagement and capacity-building within the legal sector.
A central feature of the visit was the Women Judges’ Empowerment Breakfast, where discussions focused on regional cooperation, the structure and coordination of IAWJ chapters, and opportunities for collaboration across Central Asia.

The programme also included a dedicated training session on “Effective Access to Justice: Practical Aspects,” which examined the application of rule of law principles in line with the Venice Commission’s Rule of Law Checklist. Judge Farrelly emphasized the importance of accountability, transparency, impartiality, and professional responsibility in strengthening judicial systems.
Throughout the visit, Judge Farrelly noted the strong commitment of Kazakhstani judges to advancing equal justice and their active engagement with international partners, including the United Nations and the OSCE.
Reflecting on the experience, Judge Farrelly highlighted the energy and determination of women judges in Kazakhstan to drive meaningful change for women, children, and broader society. The visit reaffirmed the IAWJ’s commitment to fostering global partnerships and supporting initiatives that enhance judicial independence, gender equality, and access to justice.
