The International Association of Women Judges is pleased to share recent updates from the Guyana Association of Women Judges (GAWJ), including its 2026 observance of the International Day of Women Judges, participation in the regional IAWJ conference in Brazil, and its 2026 calendar of events.
In her message for International Day of Women Judges 2026, GAWJ President Justice Priscilla Chandra-Hanif reflected on this year’s theme, “Women Judges on the Bench and Beyond: Protecting Access to Justice,” emphasizing the role of women judges not only in delivering judgments, but also in mentoring, public education, and advancing justice for vulnerable communities.
As part of the celebration, GAWJ hosted its annual Justice Bernard Lecture on 10 March 2026 in honor of one of Guyana’s judicial trailblazers. This year’s lecture, “The Relevance of International Human Rights for Gender Justice,” was delivered by Ms. Roberta Clarke, Chair of the Executive Committee of the International Commission of Jurists, highlighting the importance of international human rights law in strengthening gender justice and access to justice.
GAWJ also shared highlights from its participation in the regional IAWJ conference for Latin America and the Caribbean, held in Brazil on 26–27 March 2026 under the theme “Women Judges in Connection: Equity, Justice and Leadership.”
In addition, the association released its 2026 calendar of events, featuring activities such as the Justice Bernard Lecture Series, International Day of Women Judges observance, GBV-related initiatives, mentorship programming, Judicial Wellness Day, anti-trafficking awareness activities, and its 10th anniversary celebrations.
